Hi

I just received an early Christmas present. A set of castings and drawings for the Saturated Steam 2” scale Tangye. I have been wanting to build this engine for 40 years. I finally found a set of castings on a top shelf. Now to figure out where to start. Any input?

I have decided to build the scale governor first. It has 61 line items with a total of 88 individual parts. It is a project just in itself. I will post the drawings once I have them scanned.

That's a nice looking engine (A big 'un for sure).

I'm looking forward to your build,

John

I'm looking forward to following the build Tim. As you know, I have the 1" scale kit yet to be started.

I have used 1144 dress proof steel in the past and really like the way in machines. So I decided to use it on this build. I ordered some different sizes from McMaster Carr in 3 foot lengths. It should be here Wednesday.

1144 is a medium carbon, resulphurized steel with good free-machining qualities and mechanical properties. Its high sulfur content makes this particular grade have a good machinability rating of 83% as compared to 1212 steel; welding though is difficult.

Progress report?

HI: This is one of the first projects I produced shortly before I retired probably 40 years ago. This is a great engine, a copy of the real engine that was displayed in the lobby of the Small Parts Company in Miami Lakes, Florida. I saw that engine when I was on a business trip. I've also seen a large Tangye just like it in steam in Australia. I've since given my engine and all of my working prints to my son who lives in Colorado. IF you still need help with this, I'll see if I can retrieve the prints from him. This is one of the greatest projects I've done. But the mystery is why I've never seen any others at any of the Model Engineering shows I've attended. Good Luck! John

Hi John

I was gifted the molds for the engine about a year ago. I hope to make the castings available. I have found a foundry in Maine but they don’t do cast iron. I have had them cast some parts for the 1/8 scale locomotive I am building. Lack of funding is a big factor. I hope to shoot some waxes this winter. I will start with governor parts. It is a project in itself.

Hmm. Wish you were closer. Where I live in the Soviet, there is a foundry here
